F.C.G. - Fresh Coffee Goodness

"This breakfast spread looks fantastic, can I top you off?"

Of course, if you have a sentient hollow robot in your party, why wouldn't you use them as a thermos?! I had been working on an idea of how to make FCG Coffee something for the better part of this month. And then I received half-sphere silicone molds that were specifically for making hot cocoa bombs. But then I thought, why stop at cocoa? I did a little searching around the internet and found that people had made coffee bombs instead, with instant coffee, creamer, and really just about anything else you'd put into a cup of coffee.

On my recent trip to the craft store to get icing piping supplies for the roper cookies, I noticed that they had chocolate melts there. And, in my research I learned, these chocolate melts make great casing for coffee/cocoa bombs! So back to the craft store I went to get a bag! From there, the recipe came together real easy. While I suspect many of these ingredients are likely not things you'll have on hand, they are fairly easy to get (provided you have a craft store and a grocery store nearby), and the entire thing comes together in less than an hour (including chilling time).

This is a fantastic craft to do with kids (with parent supervision) and could be great gifts for your DnD party (or your family, or your significant other, or really just about anyone in your life who enjoys coffee - or hot cocoa!).

Ingredients

  • Chocolate Melts
  • Instant Coffee AND/OR - Powdered Hot Cocoa Mix
  • Optional - Powdered Non-dairy Creamer
  • Optional - Other things you like to put in your coffee (non-liquid)

You'll notice that peppermints are in my picture above, but those are optional. Read more about those in the suggestions down below.

Directions

  1. Melt chocolate melts in a bowl following the directions on the bag/container. (I found that I used about 1/4 cup for each sphere, so for me about 1 cup of chocolate melts made 4 bombs/8 half-spheres)
  2. Using a spoon, fill the half-sphere molds with chocolate, but leave the middle hollow. Make sure the chocolate is pretty thick and that you can't see the silicone mold through the chocolate.
  3. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes or until sold.
  4. Remove chocolate half-spheres from the mold.
  5. Microwave a plate for 30 seconds (or until the plate is hot)
  6. Press the "bottom" of your chocolate spheres to the plate and rotate slightly. This should cause the chocolate to melt slightly on the edges, and give you a clean rim. Don't melt off too much - just enough to clean up the edges.
  7. Fill the "bottom" of your chocolate sphere with 1 serving of instant coffee, 1 serving of powdered coffee creamer, and whatever other flavors or items you want to include.Note - they'll be REALLY full - possibly overflowing. That's okay.
  8. Press the "top" of your chocolate spheres to the hot plate (if it cooled down, wash the chocolate off and microwave it again to warm it back up), then quickly press the tops to the bottoms so they'll fuse together with the slightly melted chocolate
  9. Decorate! To get the yellow color, I used yellow food spray, and for the eyes and mouth, I used colored sanding sugar. You could also get other chocolate melts and drizzle them over the top for different colors, or even leftover royal icing, if you've been cookie decorating.

Here is how the bombs looked assembled, you can see the ring on the plate where I melted the chocolate slightly to get the spheres to melt together.

How to Use

When you are ready to use these, just pour 8oz (or about a cup) of hot water over them, and stir! I have a Keurig, and the "standard cup," size was perfect for this. I might suggest using a cup that's bigger than the 8 oz because, between all of the ingredients and the hot water, this cup will fill up quick!

Tips, Suggestions, and Substitutions

Tips & Suggestions

  • Running the "bottom" of the spheres over the hot plate to clean them up is optional, but I found when I didn't do that they ended up with gaps and weren't fully sealed, and I think cleaner edges would have helped with that.
  • These things are fragile. Don't go shaking them like maracas. Besides that the chocolate melts really easily, the heat from your fingers might go right through it. So work fast, and, if you can, put them in cupcake paper holders so you don't have to hold them with your hands.
  • If you know what you like in your coffee, play around with some of the favors! But be warned, the shell will definitely thicken your coffee up, and add a lot of flavor of whatever it is (chocolate, vanilla, what have you).

Substitutions

  • The instant coffee that I got here was Starbucks Mocha. I chose to get that flavor since I was working with chocolate. You can also get vanilla-flavored chocolate melts in which case you might want to get a different flavor of instant coffee. (I noticed my craft store even had Pumpkin Spice flavored chocolate melts!) Or, you can get just regular instant coffee, but I do recommend adding at least 1 serving of non-dairy powdered creamer to your coffee bombs if you get "regular" instant coffee.
  • For mine, I wanted to see what would happen if I crushed up a peppermint and added it to the coffee. It didn't actually come out very minty, so I'd suggest, if adding additional flavors, to add more than you think you might need. But remember, whatever you use, use only non-liquid ingredients for the filling of your bombs.

In Conclusion...

These were so much fun to make. I know I say that about almost all of my recipes (especially the desserts) but it's true! They were way easier than I expected because the chocolate was so easy to work with. I will say it was a VERY chocolatey cup of coffee. It was also the second cup of coffee I had that day. I'd love to try a few more tests on the coffee version before I maybe give them to friends or family as gifts, but I did make some hot cocoa ones for my partner. He hasn't tried them yet, but I have a feeling that chocolate and chocolate will be pretty hard to screw up.

If you want other ideas for coffee or cocoa bombs, just give it a google. The recipe that I used here wasn't from anywhere specific, and more just pulled in a bunch of ideas from several places, and some ideas of my own. It's definitely one of those recipes that no one "owns," but anyone can make!

Instructions

  1. Melt chocolate melts in a bowl following the directions on the bag/container
  2. Using a spoon, fill the half-sphere molds with chocolate, but leave the middle hollow. Make sure the chocolate is pretty thick and that you can't see the silicone mold through the chocolate.

  4. Remove chocolate half-spheres from the mold.
  5. Separately, microwave a plate for 30 seconds (or until the plate is hot)
  6. Press the "bottom" of your chocolate spheres to the plate and rotate slightly. Don't melt off too much - just enough to clean up the edges.
  7. Fill the "bottom" of your chocolate sphere with 1 serving of instant coffee, 1 serving of powdered coffee creamer, and whatever other flavors or items you want to include. Or with hot cocoa.
  8. Press the "top" of your chocolate spheres to the hot plate (if it cooled down, wash the chocolate off and microwave it again to warm it back up), then quickly press the tops to the bottoms so they'll fuse together via the melted chocolate. Decorate them if you'd like!
  9. To use the finished bomb, put it into a mug for hot beverages and pour 8 oz (about 1 cup) of water overtop. We suggest using a mug that can hold more than 8 oz of liquid.
