TALIESIN: I genuinely don't know how I've never been in here.
ASHLEY: This is cool.
SAM: Which spire are we on?
LAURA: The Lantern Spire.
TRAVIS: I take out my notepad and I just start sketching without taking my eyes off of the ship. Inspiration striking. I grab the wood and start working.
TALIESIN: Oh yeah, it's because I never give a fuck up here, that's why.
MATT: You enter the interior, and while it is a beautifully intricate, almost art piece-like structure, it is a bit cramped in there. It looks like everything may have actually been built out of a ship, (laughs) because it is just a crushed, low interior. There are blue lanterns that give this bluish glow to the inside. The smell's a bit musty, and you hear this single sound of a music box. ♪ Ding ding ding ding ding ♪ There is a music box in the center back of the room that's just playing on its own.
TRAVIS: Burn it down.
TALIESIN: I walk over and tap it.
MATT: Okay, you tap it. "Yes?" (gasping)
MATT: Suddenly out from behind the counter, a young human girl, beautiful, dark tan skin, black hair that's cut to a bob that's a bit scattered and wild. She has her hair pulled up with a band that's wrapped behind. Big leather gloves on and a bit of a smear on one arm. Leans forward towards your face.
TALIESIN: Fuck. (laughs)
MATT: "Hi."
TALIESIN: (laughs) Hi!
MATT: "Can I help you? What are you doing? You're here."
TALIESIN: Well, first off, we're here to shop. Secondly, is this real or is this just a deep commitment to a bit?
MATT: "Yes." (laughter)
MATT: "Great, shopping. That's awesome. All right. Wonderful. Let's make some sales today. I love it, I love it. What are you looking for? I might have some. Hold on a second." She rummages just through something in the back and pulls out a canteen and just chugs a bunch of water and it spills down the chin. (slurps) "Anyway. So what can I do? What can I do for you?"
TALIESIN: First off, I have to know your name. I don't care about a lot of people's names, but I have to know yours. Please.
MATT: "You first."
TALIESIN: Aaron.
TRAVIS: (laughs)
LAURA: Aaron? (laughter)
MARISHA: What?
TALIESIN: I was trying to think of a bullshit name and I couldn't think of one. I freaked out.
ASHLEY: Aaron?
TALIESIN: I freaked out. I was Byron, and then it just--
TRAVIS: That was a nosedive.
MATT: "That's so weird. That's my name, too."
TALIESIN: Ashton. My name's Ashton. I give the fuck up. I'm not good at that. I'm just not fucking good at it.
MATT: "Just the slightest bit of forthrightness, and we're already off on the right foot. Ashton, pleasure to meet you. I'm Marwa Endalia."
LAURA: Oh!
TRAVIS: Oh.
MATT: "This was my father's establishment, and kind of a junk heap, but you find a couple of fun things here and there."

Trove of Marwa Cookies
All this is stuff that I just found. Me and my dad found over the past 10 years or so.
This is another one of those weeks where I wasn't quite sure what I was going to make. I wasn't too interested in trying my hand at Cherry Chloraseptic (ew) and, as fun as it sounded, Glass Eggs felt a bit... dangerous? But I couldn't get over the character of Marwa. That chaotic energy, the relationship she had with her dad, the stories (that honestly... I don't know if I believe them all but I also kinda don't care). Needless to say, I love the party's new favorite vendor. And I wanted to pay her tribute with a recipe
But tell me, what do you make the character who has everything? Easy - cookies! Not just cookies, cookies that can have (almost) no wrong answers. Cookies that you can make quick and have a good time making them. Cookies... with potato chips.
This recipe is a twist on a cookie recipe you may have heard of - Kitchen Sink cookies. If that doesn't mean anything to you, you aren't alone. My partner didn't really grow up using this phrase, but it means "everything but the kitchen sink." Or, another way of saying "basically everything you could ever want." I'm not sure why the kitchen sink doesn't get included in that, but I didn't come up with it. I think that's enough tangents for now though... let's talk ingredients because BOY are they fun!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter - softened but not melted. Ideally room temperature.
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups of... "all this stuff that I just found." aka fillings, aka mix-ins.
The mix-ins are what really make this recipe a fun time. There are almost no wrong answers for what you can put it in. My only suggestions - don't add anything liquid (or you'll throw off the consistency of the batter), and try to keep things about the size of a chocolate chip (or they'll be harder to mix in). Think about all of the things you can mix into ice cream at a place like Dairy Queen - that's all stuff you can put in these cookies and more. I've included a picture here of some of the stuff you could use, but some other fun ideas include cereal, coconut shavings, really anything you could find in trail mix, the candy bar left over from your last road trip, the last few chips from that bag of chocolate chips that's been in your cupboard for a while that isn't enough to make cookies but you don't wanna buy more, the crumbs at the bottom of the potato chip bag, popped popcorn, mini marshmallows, top 'em with salt... the list goes on and on my friend. Just like the amount of stuff found in Marwa's shop.
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper, or lightly grease them with cooking spray.
- In a small bowl combine dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Get together your 2 cups of mixins in a small bowl. Note: don't put your mixins away once you prepare them, keep them handy for topping the cookies later!
- In a large bowl (or in a stand mixer) beat butter and brown and granulated sugars together. Mix for about 1-2 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until just combined.
- Add in the flour mixture about 1/2 cup at a time, beating each time until just combined.
- Add in your 2 cups of mix-ins. Make sure they're incorporated throughout, but try not to over mix. (If the batter becomes crumbly, stop mixing!)
- Scoop 1-2 tablespoons worth of batter and place onto cookie sheet a couple of inches apart. You don't need to make perfectly round balls or make them look nice at all. Chaos is what we want for Marwa!
- Take some of your reserved mix-ins and top the dough balls with them. This step is optional but it makes for prettier cookies. (When I made mine I put small chip pieces, pretzel pieces, and extra sprinkles on top)
- Bake the cookies for 9-12 minutes. The edges, where the cookie meets the sheet, should start to get golden brown. The cookies might feel a bit underdone to the touch in the middle, but that's okay, we want them to stay soft. And because they're so full they won't flatten out much.
- Let the cookies cool on the sheet.
Tips, Suggestions, and Substitutions
Tips & Suggestions
- The cookie base here is really basic, but that's by design. Whatever you put in the cookies is the star.
- If you have mix-ins that are too big, crush them down to size. I put some of mine in a plastic bag and just smooshed them to get them to be the right size.
Substitutions
- I don't have much for you on substitutions here. Because I'm pretty sure you'll never make these cookies the same way twice if you're doing the mix-ins correctly. Don't overthink it. Just have fun!
In Conclusion...
I straight-up laughed out loud making these cookies. And then again eating them. I also have a personal passion for sprinkles and was so happy to have a recipe where I could just go crazy with the sprinkles. Because you better believe I did. My partner bit into it and said it was noisy to eat. And, depending on the bite you get, they might be salty cookies, but that's what this chaos means! Man, this was so much fun. This recipe originally came from the Celebrating Sweets cooking blog. I looked around at a few versions of this recipe, but I liked this one because it made not too many cookies, called for lots of mixins, and was a basic recipe that let the mix-ins shine.
All I ask, is if you make your own Trove cookies, you tell me what you put in them? I want more ideas for the next time that I make these. And also, if you have any questions or suggestions, or just wanna say hi, please leave all that in the comments below. If you want, I'm on Pinterest and Twitter, and post new recipes every week if you wanna follow along. Thanks for visiting, and don't forget to love each other. Is it Thursday, yet?
I haven't processed that. That's probably trauma... What?
