"Why I Love Maple Syrup" - Episode 9

MATT: "He is in Artana's custody and whatever business he's gotten-- wherever she may be, he's being taken to whatever debts he may have accrued."
ASHLEY: My, a monster, that certainly would explain some of our wild nights.
MATT: "You are an interesting one."
ASHLEY: Who?
MATT: "You."
ASHLEY: Sometimes.
MATT: "Explain how wild some of these nights could have been."
ASHLEY: Oh, just, I don't know if it's appropriate.
MATT: "We're just friends here in a room."
ASHLEY: Oh boy, it was lots of things that involved--
MATT: Right there, we come back to you guys. (laughter)
SAM: Ashton, give it a whack! Come on, knock this thing down!
LIAM: Orym is slashing the hinges that Laudna had been working on.
TALIESIN: Is everyone... just... going on it?
LAURA: Yeah, are we just--
LIAM: I mean, we're just working on it.
ROBBIE: I'm trying to pull at the top hinge, trying to just pull on it.
MATT: Let's just go ahead and-- I think at this point, it's more about making a combined strength check between those who are working on it right now. So if you're pulling on it and you're helping out with the hinges.
TRAVIS: I'm still working on the lock.
ASHLEY: Listen--
ROBBIE: 22 for strength.
TALIESIN: Oh wow.
MATT: Great, yeah. (clinks) The door pulls away.
TRAVIS: Natural 20-- Oh. (laughter)
MARISHA: Oh my god!
TALIESIN: The door held lock just-- (laughter)
ROBBIE: Holding the door over my head.
TRAVIS: Teamwork!
LIAM: Like, once it's off the hinges.
MATT: Yep.
LIAM: (like Chutney) I got it!
TRAVIS: One for one!
MATT: The dust kicks up around it and soot just fills the air. You can't help but find yourself cough through instinct. And as it begins to clear back again you see, there are a number of lights further down the hall and the stairways lead down to the chamber. Looks like some individuals with headlamp circumstances are glancing over in your direction as two armed guards, the two that you had originally encountered come around the corner, weapons drawn, and look towards you as the fallen door's dust begins to settle.
LAURA: Someone needs to fix those hinges. We just knocked on the door and it fell right on down.
[...]
MATT: Okay, so roll a deception check with disadvantage, girl.
LAURA: Yep.
TRAVIS: Whoa.
LAURA: Whoa, that's really good! I know, it's a double dice.
LIAM: Oh, is it?
ASHLEY: That thing is so cool.
LAURA: So that's a 20 with disadvantage.
MATT: Very nice. The two guards standing there, the wardens glance at each other. "Hold on, just need to get our um... Don't move, don't move. We'll get this squared away. It's been really confusing here." Real quickly, he looks at the other guards and he's like, "Yeah, we just need to, um-- Boss? Boss!" And as you both-- he's leaned into the table. Hearing this in the background and goes, "(sighs) My apologies."
ASHLEY: I mean, that's why I just love maple syrup, so. Here's the thing, though. I got to go!

"Why I Love Maple Syrup"

I'm going to cast Charm Person.

A lot goes into deciding what recipes I'm going to make every week. I often ask my partner for input (and he does often have good ideas too). I also try to take the flow of the blog itself into consideration, so I try not to do a character too frequently, or twice in a row. Sometimes, I come up with ideas that I know will come back, things that are going to become recurring themes, so maybe it's something I can tuck away for a later episode where it's more relevant, or more important, or maybe just an off week. And then sometimes the perfect line comes along and all that goes out the window. And that is what happened here.

Fearne's line here definitely has sexual connotations. Perhaps obviously so. But I think Fearne is a bit more of a wild card than that. So when she starts the sentence with, "Oh boy, it was lots of things that involved--" and is cut off, I like to imagine she described a lot of physical acts that made them very hungry and all they really had in the house was fresh fish, vegetables, and maple syrup (makes sense for a forest, no?). And when they tried them all together she realized how versatile syrup was. And not only could you use it for cooking, but other things... if you don't mind making a bit of a mess. Wink. "I mean... that's why I just love maple syrup," obviously because it's so... versatile.

And it is! And here is the recipe to prove it! (Fun Fact: Maple was mentioned twice in this episode... I found that interesting) Here is my new favorite salmon and vegetable sheet pan dinner!

Ingredients

Salmon

  • 1 lb Salmon (fillets)
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 lime (zest and juice)
  • 1 shallot - finely chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard

Vegetables

  • 1 lb Brussels sprouts
  • 1/2 to 1 lb carrots
  • 2 Tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 3 Tablespoons pure maple syrup

Ignore the corn starch pictured here, I ended up not needing it.

I really do recommend getting pure maple syrup for this. Not "pancake syrup" not "original syrup," not "maple-flavored syrup." Just read the bottles in the grocery store, you can tell what's real and what's not. The real stuff is also not as thick so I found that it coated and spread better. Here's the syrup that I used.

bottle of maple syrup

Directions

  1. Wash, dry, all produce. Preheat oven to 425F.
  2. Mix the ingredients for the salmon glaze (syrup, lime juice and zest, diced shallot, soy sauce, and mustard) in a small-to-medium bowl. Coat the salmon with the glaze either in a bag, or let it rest on a plate. It needs to marinate for about 30 minutes.
  3. Trim and halve the brussels sprouts. Peel and cut the carrots to be about the same size as the halved sprouts.
  4. Mix melted butter and syrup for vegetables in a medium-to-large bowl. Add veggies and stir to coat.
  5. Spread the vegetables on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes then toss. Bake for another 10 minutes, toss again and move to one side of the baking sheet
  6. Pull the salmon out of the marinade and put it onto the empty side of the baking sheet with the veggies. Pour the extra glaze over the salmon. Bake for another 5 minutes, toss the veggies again, then bake for 6 minutes
  7. Enjoy!

Tips, Suggestions, and Substitutions

Tips & Suggestions

  • You can use 2 baking sheets if you need to. When I made this I only needed about half a pound of carrots, so I had enough space on my baking sheet for the salmon. But if you use all the carrots, you might need the extra space.
  • If you aren't too into lime, use just half the zest.
  • When I made this I also made some cilantro lime rice (which complimented it well!) So, if you're looking for a side dish, rice, quinoa, or even potatoes will do!

Substitutions

  • You could also put parsnips in here or rainbow carrots. But try to keep it at around 2 lbs of veggies, no more unless you're also going to increase the veggie glaze.
  • Instead of a shallot, you can use a couple of cloves of garlic, if that's what you have on hand, or if you don't want to use shallots for whatever reason.
  • If your salmon is thicker than 1 inch, you'll want to increase the baking time of the salmon - a good general rule is about 10-12 minutes per inch of thickness.

In Conclusion...

My partner doesn't usually rant and rave about recipes. But when he tried this one his first words were "why are the vegetables so sweet?!" He definitely knew I was making this so when I told him maple syrup he felt kinda silly. But, all the same, he really liked this! My partner also has simple tastes, he often says things are too complex for his palate, but not this! I also found this to be really good, and really easy, and everything reheats well too if you have leftovers. Both of us finished the fish and leftovers VERY quickly. This one is a 10/10, and I'll be making this again.

This recipe was a combination of about 4 recipes, but I want to give them all credit. I changed a few things, added the shallots, adjusted the measurements, but the original concepts came from here:

Please let me know if you also try to make this. I personally love a good sheet pan dinner because they're pretty easy to throw together, and this one is particularly yummy. If you have any questions or suggestions, or just wanna say hi, please leave them in the comments below, I'd love to hear from you! If you wanna follow me, I'm on Pinterest or Twitter, if those kinds of things are your jam. I'm hoping to expand soon, I just haven't had the time/energy. Maybe that's a good new years goal! Thanks again for visiting, and don't forget to love each other. Is it Thursday, yet?

Can you guys-- who's in charge here?
